When Doris Hoit became the city librarian in 1936, the Pasadena Public Library consisted of the Central Library and four small branches. She envisioned a library system in which no resident would be more than a mile away from a library.
It all started in 1951 when the Board of City Directors approved the construction of a branch library in the San Rafael community. The City chose the property on Nithsdale Road and Avenue 64 as the ideal location, but residents in that area opposed a library in their neighborhood, claiming that it would lower property value and increase traffic in the area and make it unsafe for children walking to school.

Central Library staff will be re-assigned to other branches in order to offer expanded service hours at those locations. Library phone, chat, online content, and programming will continue without change, Derderian said.
Library officials found surprising demand for virtual services during the course of the pandemic, and are aiming to hold on to such programming for now. So patrons will still be able to attend virtual programs and officials encourage users to contact library staff by phone at 626-744-4066, option 7; email at ask@cityofpasadena.email.libanswers.com; live chat at -chat/ and pick up materials on hold.
With Allendale and soon Villa-Parke, the library will have eight of its dozen branches open for in-person, a much-needed boost to capacity, given the unexpected closure of the Central Library in May due to seismic safety concerns. Officials are working on how to allocate Central Library services and its collection. The Hill Avenue branch remains available for curbside service only.

Pasadena had a public library before it was incorporated as a city. The Pasadena Central Library was designed by architect Myron Hunt and dedicated in 1927.[120] The library has an area of 110,000 square feet (10,000 m2) and was recently renovated without damaging any of its historic integrity.[120] Movies like Matilda, Legally Blonde and Red Dragon utilized the Pasadena Central Library for both its architecture and interior while filming.[121] The library is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[120]
Last Spring I had an American Public Library project exhibit at the Main Library in San Francisco. After the show I received an email from Lars Olson who works for the city of Fanoe in Denmark. His daughter lives in San Bruno and while he was visiting he went to see the Library exhibit. He is a city manager in Fanoe and said that they were about to open a new school/community center/public library and wanted to have a permanent installation of my library work there. They also wanted to pay for us to spend a week in Denmark as their guests, give a few lectures and teach a workshop. Ellen and I gladly agreed and spent the first week in October on the beautiful little island of Fanoe off the southwest coast of Denmark. We also traveled to cities on the mainland where the show will be displayed in two other public libraries. It was fascinating to see the Danish public libraries where the work will be displayed. It has been reported that the Danes are the happiest people on earth. Although they are heavily taxed they do get universal health care and free education through college. And they also have the least disparity of wealth. Do I see a pattern here? We were treated like royalty but when we got back I craved a fresh California salad! 2ff7e9595c
